It's an interesting question. Some answers so far have mentioned religion, and I think it ties into it somewhat.

I've noticed that, for the most part, big cities like Seattle, Los Angeles, DC, and NYC, tend to be more liberal-minded and less God-fearing. I don't mean this as an insult. Bear with me.

Conversely, rural towns, and generally sparsely populated states tend to be more conservative and religious.

I think there's a reason for this. Living in a big city, we are surrounded with our own accomplishments: Sky scrapers, near-instant communication, sexy cars, billboards...It's no wonder people don't seem to believe in God as much. In a very real way, it is made easy to believe that we are in control of everything by simply looking at the level of technology humanity has produced.

However, people who live in a rural area have less of this. They are surrounded by the natural state, and are more secluded, and therefore vulnerable, and fearful. "In God's Country" is a phrase that comes to mind. Immersed in nature, it's no surprise that they see themselves as being small and less powerful, and therefore fearful of God. This, I believe, puts them firmly in the conservative mainstream.

I'm not trying to flame either liberals or conservatives here. This is a theory I've held for years, and it's why I believe Hollywood, among other cities (although there are exceptions), is majority liberal.

Because they are creative - not content with the "because I say so" standards of society. While this leads to many good things, it can be carried too far.

And as far as the fiscally liberal;

Because to succeed in hollywood, requires luck & connections even more than it requires talent.

And many transfer this experience to life as a whole.

This leads to assumptions that those who are poor are so strictly because they aren't connected & have bad luck.

But my experience has shown me that MANY poor people stay poor because they lack a good work ethic or ability to save the money they have. The people who are NOT like that are usually only poor for a period of time. They work thier way out of the whole.

Because eventhough Hollywood has its share of spoiled brats, many of the most famous actors did in fact come from middle or working class households.

That and the fact that creative people tend to be more open minded to new ideas and ways of doing things.

Because they are rich and smart? Who exactly does that describe? I'll give you rich, but who is smart? Paris Hilton? Lindsey Lohan? Britney Spears? Rosie O'Donnel?

The definition is a liberal is someone who feels a great debt to their fellow man, and why wouldn't they in Hollywood? The problem is that they want to pay off that debt with your money.

Just because the media and journalsist tell you they are liberal... does not mean they are liberal.

People will tell you they are honest, to hide the fact they are lieing...

There are way more closet neo cons out there... supporting the republican agenda.

Because many of we "arty" people are open to different points of view, have a decent quota of intelligence and don't run screaming in fits of indignant hysterics if someone disagrees with us.
Nor do we assume that if you've had a decent education you are instantly not to be trusted and that being unengaged and "jus' playn spoken" is a virtue.

And regarding education Abu#2 i'm an actor and I graduated from Oxford.

You could write a dissertation on that subject. conventionally people in the arts are generally ones who often think and behave outside the normals of accepted societal behaviour.
A person who acts out of the norms of society is generally against authority, their moral compass is not in the same direction as the majority etc..
So naturally conservatism would be contrary to their will and demeanor. So as like minded people tend to congregate it is only logical that you would end up with lots of liberals in hollywood.
Thats the short of it anyway.

What's the matter? Aren't you getting enough of Nazi "Triumph of the Will" type of propaganda films from Fox news corp or from the White House and Pentagon these days? To be an artist means you're open minded and have the ability to empathize. I have never met a conservative artist. They just don't have it in them to be creative. Sorry, but it's the truth.

It's whatever looks the least PHONY and is the most in fashion will be the politics du jour.

After all their people will call the liberals people and they'll all DO LUNCH.

It's the only place one can express their artistic selves without being censored. Why do conservatives complain that all Hollywood actors and actresses and liberal but will turn around and pay to go see their movies? If they bother you that bad don't go to the movies.
