Make sure you close the choke when starting; then after it starts and runs a minute or so, open the choke.
If you are doing that and it still shuts off, then you might tighten the bolts/nuts around the sealing gasket to eliminate any possible air leaks into the engine.

When I went to buy my first lawnmower I saw 3 aisles full or parts, that's when I decided to get an electric one, no maintenance, no gas, no oil, no noise, no fumes, no parts to replace, there is a reason why they so many lawnmowers shops and part dealers, because they break a lot, get an electric one!!

Most of the time what you describe is caused by a dirty carburator. It will have to come off, be taken apart and cleaned. Put it back together with a rebuild kit, make sure the gas tank is clean and it will run like new.

the air filter is probably stopped up with dirt & oil. Just wash it in hot soapy water & squeeze it dry, put a few drops of clean oil on it & squeeze it so the oil will cover the filter lightly &re-install it on your lawnmower.
