From what I remember Billy did not like Reggie's ego, and did not like Reggie's style of play. Reggie had a definite label of being a hot dog, and he celebrated home runs. Billy was from the Yankee system which discouraged celebrations. Billy also thought that Reggie was lazy, way too selfish, and a bad fielder.
Also Billy may have been carrying a grudge from the 1972 playoffs. The playoffs had the Tigers, managed by Billy, against the A's, which had Reggie as the biggest star. That series was nasty. In game 2 Billy ordered a pitcher, Lerin LeGrow to throw at A's shortstop Bert Campanaris. Campanaris threw his bat at LeGrow causing a big fight. The series was in the 5th and final game tied 2-2. The game itself was tied 0-0. Reggie stole home against the Tigers, for the only run of the game. Reggie tore a hamstring on the play which caused him to miss the World Series. Billy was upset at not getting to the World Series, and I believe carried a grudge against Reggie for that.

Billy disliked a lot of his players and I don't think race played into it. He hated Larry Gura, Dave Boswell and Ed Whitson who were all white. He loved scrappy players who were resourceful and he especially hated players who voiced their complaints in the press like Elliott Maddox. Martin grew up very poor in Oakland and probably related to black and Latin players better than most white managers. Rickey Henderson loved Billy Martin . I think Martin took a special liking to Rod Carew and helped encourage him as an aggressive basestealer.

Oh, yeah. The slugout in the dugout. Ha ha ha. Billy Martin became into between the somewhat great managers of all-time. He took 5 distinctive communities to the submit season. Reggie became into Mr. October and Mr. air of secret. purely the Mick had extra. those have been some dang reliable Yankee communities.

Billy Martin probably was a bigot. I mean his highly publicized fights with some of his players kind of point to that.
Although some people will try to defend Billy.
He was a jingoist and anybody who opposed his tactics would get it and that's why he got his arm broken. He was a hotheaded egotistical punk. And being a bigot doesn't just refer to race, that's called racist and I never called him that. You can be a bigot without being a racist. Reggie was probably that way as well, just like Sheffield is today.

Because Reggie was very selfish, and not a team player at all. He was also very outspoken when it came to the media. Old school players and managers preferred to keep their problems "in house". Reggie was one of the first to go to the media and voice his opinion outside of the clubhouse.
