I posted this question in Baseball, but I thought I'd post it here too, was Derek Sanderson Jeter named after Derek Sanderson the hockey player?

Yes he was. Derek Sanderson Jeter was indeed named after the former Boston Bruin and New York Ranger. From what I have always heard, Derek Sanderson was the favorite hockey player of Jeter's parents, hence the tribute. I even remember this from an interview Michael Kay did with Jeter back when Kay was on Yankees radio in 2000 (Kay moved to TV later on, of course).

As has been previously mentioned, Yes.

Several Years ago, Derek Sanderson was Jeter's guest at a Yankee's game and the two of them did an autograph session afterwards. My daughter has a picture of her with the pair of them...she's a huge Jeter fan, even though she's been married 18 years to a Mets executive.

It has been reported as being a possibility. Jeter was born in Pequannock Township, NJ and Sanderson was a Ranger at the time, so it might actually be true.

I doubt it, since Jeter was raised a Yankees fan in Kalamazoo. Go figure.

I seriously doubt it. Derek is not an uncommon name. The spelling they use is a little odd, but not unheard of.
