It's wounded but there is still some great stuff out there. Ohmega Whatts, Breakestra, J5(wasn't too crazy for the last one), MFDoom, Quasimoto, etc. I think the underground is where it's at right now.

Kanye is part of the problem not the solution. Hip-Hop is still alive, but rap is dead. When all you talk about is how much money you have, how big your rims are, and what kind of car you drive, it kills what rap was/is all about. I think the rappers that could bring it back to a respectable level would be: Nas, DMX, Jay-Z (even though Kingdom Come sucked), Dr. Dre, Outkast (90's style), Talib Kweli, Redman, Too Short, Wu-Tang, Eminem, Tha Dogg Pound, and Bone Thugs. That is if they went back to their original styles.

Hip-hop is nowhere near dead, it jsut moved underground. There are still a huge number of MC's still producing real ****. You just gotta search a little cuz you sure as hell won't hear their stuff on BET or MTV.
Example: Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Pharoahe Monch, Immortal Technique, Common, those are some of the better known artists.
As people above me said, greedy corporate ***** have taken over mainstream media; thats who to blame for not hearing real hip-hop on the radio. Its not any particular artists fault necessarily, although they do contribute somewhat.

your wrong the south is blowin up with hip hop. It's prob. the only place that is actually producing good artists. everyone else is either done or making crappy main stream music to get air time and $$. i could sit here and list off numerous bad a s s rappers from the south but man you gotta give love to the south. Houston Texas at the bottom of the map baby!

Hip hop is dying because the music industry has become too commercialized... when any group of guys in the street could make a unique sound, hip hop was truly a great urban art form. Now, the major labels decide what you will hear, and it is very unfortunate.

Yes mike sadly its dead. I dont even listen to hip hop anymore. I'm now an official rock fan. The lyrics are garbage and everything seems so fake now. So commercialized its crazy. I knew hip hop was dead when i heard that song about chicken noodle soup, like you i kept faith that someone could bring it back but then the other day i heard that song about lip gloss and decided to just let it go...R.I.P Hip Hop...You will be missed. =( lol

It has decreased from what it was.Especially on the rap side of things, you use to have all types of Rap in the 90's.Rap like jazz infused rap,Tribe called quest Gangsta rap etc..Now Gangsta rap seems like the only rap form that is getting notice. The funny thing about gangsta rap is that they say this is what goes on in the hood but the hood isn't bad all the time.Hip hop is making a resurrection with artist like those of the Good Music group and many more.

I started to realize hip hop was dead when I noticed new stuff coming out this year that sound like it could have come out about 7 years ago. There's no more progression.

Someone with originality. Seriously, you can rap and have the beat to many man topics. You don't have to rap incessantly about a**, sex, drugs, and the 'hood'. If rappers want the genre to stay alive, they must rap about something else because the same stuff is getting boring. Take 50 Cent's new mainstream rap. It has an awesome beat to it, but then he ruins it with the same old lyrics "she goes on the floor. she can get low", etc." It was cool the first 1,000 times but now it's just waaay too predictable.

no its not.
mainstream hiphop, yes. but you still have artists like common, nas, jay, and talibs album is comin out soon.
i do think that the south is steadily killing hip hop, but they still have great artists such as cunninlynguists.
so to answer your question, hiphop in general is still a thriving culture and will still be around for a long time, but mainstream rap, yeah, thats been dead for a while
