Hi DJJD-You say your Dad feels ill from the "prescription" meds he gets from his doctor. Did his doctor just put him on pills immediately upon finding out he had high blood BP and cholesterol? I ask because the first thing the highest majority of knowlegable GP's will try their oout on a low fat, low cholesterol strict diet. And if your Dad is a smoker, he should have been told to quit like yesterday. Also, your Dad should've been given a "recommended excercise routine that The DR approves of".?...Well, there are so many things that can be tried BEFORE (trust me, once doc's get a BP/Cholesterol patient on pills, they are for life, like luggage, and the side effects can really make one feel very poorly, like YOUR Dad did) There is a fruit juice that is sold in most large grocery stores (Tesco, Asda, etc.) that is AWESOME for these two maladies, it is: "Pomenegrate Juice"-My fiancee' has high BP and high cholesterol and we have managed to keep him from NOT having to take pills; and we have come VERY close to almost having to a few times. BTW, the Pomegrenate juice "usually" comes with one other added healthy juice, like "acai berries" (taste like blueberries) and "raspberry", or it can be bought straight with just the pomegrenate juice. He also takes "Ginko Biloba" 3 times a week and drinks the actimel bacterial drinks (they come usually in 6 packs, and are very, very small bottles., like the same amount of a medium sized shot glass) Also, it sounds gross, and I'm glad I don't have to drink it: It's Soya milk and he alternates each week from Soya milk to Rice milk (Actimel) and he swears it tastes good. We take a 5-10 mt. walk every night after dinner, and on weekends we take our son out-i.e. to the park, for soccer practice, we help out the RSPCA and are volunteer "dog-walkers", etc. My biggest suggestion is to try as many avenues as you can to keep your Dad from having to stay on pills, because he'll be on them for life. Good luck to you and your dad.
God bless!

Three things can help to lower blood pressure.
1) Be no more that your ideal weight
2) it is lowered by regular vigorous CV exercise
3) Minimise salt intake.
However even if these three helpful instructions are followed I have never seen a patient with established hypertension lower their blood pressure sufficiently to avoid medication.
Cholesterol is reduced and the lipid profile improved also by 3 things.
1) Decrease all animal products in the diet
2) Increase oily fish intake
3) Yet again vigorous exercise improves the profile.
Again unfortunately about the best fall in cholesterol that can be maintained with non-pharmacological techniques is a drop of 10% from the initial starting cholesterol. This is seldom sufficient.

If he is overweight. Loss weight. That will help the BP... cholesterol... That's a hard one. If there is no genetic predisposition, then he should not eat any fat. Nothing fried, no cheese, keep milk no fat. Eat things like bran and oatmeal. Eat more white meat chicken with no skin and less beef and pork.
However if there are other family member who have high cholesterol, there is probably a genetic link to it that he can not lower it the way other's can by diet and will need to use a cholesterol lowering drug. There are many on the market and if one bothers him he should try a different one.

I know its boring, but diet is the best way to lower cholesterol. Have porridge for breakfast or an oat cereal with semi-skimmed milk and a piece of fruit. Chicken, turkey and fish with vegetables for main meals, and again fresh fruit for deserts. A small glass of red wine is ok, it helps to keep the arteries clear. No more than 3 eggs a week, and cut out all cakes, biscuits and rich puddings, butter and fats. If you need a pick, 8 walnuts are recommended, and all salad vegetables are good. Do try, its worth it in the long run.

the best way is to go back to the doctor and he can prescribe
different cholesterol drugs that will work. I had a reaction to Lovastatin (Mevacor), I had leg muscle pains so bad i could hardly walk. i was switched to Atorvastatin (Lipitor) and my bad cholesterol was below the low range and no side affects. Statins can keep your arteries clean , can help delay Alzheimer's . There are newer BP meds that work great oatmeal will only drop cholesterol about 4 %, if yours is high, high, you need statins.

Check with your dr or a dietician about a specialized diet. Diet plays a key role raising or lowering your blood pressure and cholesterol.

Avortastatin 80mgs nightly like myself for the lowering of cholesterol. Walnuts to lower blood pressure-as does garlic-raw and uncooked. All nuts except peanuts and macadamia nuts aid good health.

If it is not hereditary, then exercise is the best and will lower it the most. if he doesn't exercise he should start small and gradually increase it. If this doesn't align with his medication than it is probably best he inquire to his doctor for advice.
The other things mentioned above do help. Out of the foods probably oatmeal every morning helps the most. And having other whole grains in your lunch and dinner helps the most. try whole grain bread, or whole grain pasta. caffeine in moderation, so not five cups of coffee a day, or 5 coca colas, maybe one if any.

i'm not sure what meds your dad has tried but i'm taking one called ALTACE. I think i finally have the dose down right and i'm feeling so much better. i'm working on cutting salt out of my diet. there is so much salt already in stuff that I really wasn't aware of before.
no matter how perfect your diet is though, the high blood pressure and cholesterol can be heriditary. you have your genes / generations of family before you to thank :- )
