You are missing an important part of this equation. People who believe in God believe in the soul and an afterlife. When people die, it is not a bad thing. The circumstances under which they die may be a bad thing, particularly if they are man-made circumstances involving murder or torture, but death in itself is fine. People die, and their souls go to God or heaven or whatever. So there is no blame to be placed. It is a natural occurrence. It is just a part of life. Considering the world's overpopulation problem, death is really a good thing, especially if there is an afterlife.
That said, when people are thankful for a rescue, naturally they thank God. It is not because the person was saved from death, necessarily, so much as the fact that the grateful survivors get to continue living with their loved one. God spared the person, and now they get to enjoy that person's survival.
So, if someone really believes in God, there really isn't anything funny about this at all. That is not to say that YOU should believe in God, but rather that your perspective prevents you from understanding how these people feel. Of course, they don't understand how YOU feel, either. So I do not intend that as criticism. It is just a fact of life. We're all different. Nothing wrong with that!
Have a good one!

why would you blame God for a tragedy? Its not like He's pointing his finger down on earth and creating a hurricane!! you obviously know nothing about religion and faith. STOP blaming GOD for your problems!! things just happen. its called Life!!

Most people blame God first, especially ones who think their faithful and perfect. From your perspective that nobody blames God for the disaster is because God is the creator of all good, not evil and distruction.

How about when Nagin said New Orleans needs to look at itself because Katrina could have been a message from God? God is credited when things go wrong and it is credited to his wraith, he is as well credited for intervening and his forgiveness and I am willing to wager both are true and happen frequently.

We cause our own tragedy not God. God can and will often intervene if asked to. Not really a complicated concept, is it?

That's because people are more comfortable with a God of love than a God of justice and vengeance.

Why do atheists blame God for everything that goes wrong, if they dont' even believe in God in the first place? They must be completely confused in their beliefs.

No, it's the other way around. They don't believe God exists in their every day lives but as soon as something bad happens they quickly wonder 'Why did God let this happen?' or 'Lord, help me!'
Hypocritical and PATHETIC!
