Really depends on the fish tropical fish would need a warmer temperature than a goldfish. You should keep the fish in the bag that the pet store gave them to you in and float the bag on top of the tank for about 20 min so the water in the bag is the same temperature as in the tank. You should either ask the people in the pet store or look online to find the correct temperature for the fish you are buying.

It depends on the type of fish. Coldwater fish such as goldfish don't need a heater and prefer colder waters. 68-70 degrees F is about perfect, but they can handle down to 40 degrees F easily and some types, below freezing. Tropicals and saltwater need waters around 72-82 degrees, but fish such as mollies can handle slightly cooler waters, i.e. around 68-78. The more important thing is that your water temperature stays constant and doesn't fluctuate very much.

room temp don't put fish in any water for at lease 12 hrs after you fill up the tank also don't just pour the fish in the tank if you bought the fish from a store they put it in a bag put the bag in the water for at least 10 Min's so its not a shock to them
