Ask your mother if she was one of the many millions of women that were prescribed with Valium during the 60s and 70s. If she was, she can tell you how addictive Valium is. It is highly addictive and many women got paranoid on it. Many couldn't leave their home for many years. Valium is a dangerous drug and in the UK, it is very rarely ever used now. Short of a total ban, Valium is now only used in extreme cases. As for Ativan, we don't know what damage it does yet. It took two decades before the drug companies and Governments admitted that Valium was lethal. It was too late for millions of women. Then we had Thalidimide, once again, by the time the public was made aware of the side effects, it was too late for too many women and too many babies were being born malformed (dwarfish limbs on full sized bodies). We now know that Viagra is a killer and that the wonder drug of the 90s ( can't remember the name) caused the suicide of many people. It was supposed to be a "Happy Drug" and all the celebs were taking it until many suicides over a few years, were linked to the drug and it made people suicidal. To be honest, I wouldn't trust a drug company or any Governement when it comes to drugs. By the time the US drug company is being sued over Ativan, they will push the drug hard in Europe. European sales will increase the profits of the drug company so any compensation in the US is adequately covered. A few years after, proceedings will start in EU countries but that doesn't bother the drug companies as payouts in Europe are relatively low than those of the US. To pay for the EU cases, the US drug company will push the drug in Asia and Africa as in poor nations, they don't have the means to sue the company and drug companies will use bribery and corruption to prevent any possibility. Drug companies know their products are not safe but they also know that it can take years for problems to come to light and they can make huge profits in that time. It is also known and it's not uncommon, for drug companies to corrupt their research into the drugs they plan to sell. When they give their reports to Governments and / or Licensing Agences, they have made sure that the research shows the drug is safe, even if they know it isn't. If you are using Ativan, start praying, as if it does have any similar effects as Valium, you are likely to be in a mental institution pretty soon.
Yes! it was Prozac! I couldn't remember the name.

having taken ativan myself, I find that it just makes a person calmer and less anxious.
Valium is a lot stronger and tends to make the person sleepy to a near sedated stage. I knew a girl who was prescribed both valium and vicadin at the same time. She would literally fall asleep while walking (the few days she could).

Both are Minor Tranquilizers belong to the group called benzodiazepines .
These drugs have the potential for abuse and addiction. Both are central nervous system depressants.
Long term usage could cause increased heart rate and lowered blood pressure; shakiness; loss of appetite; muscle cramps; impairment of memory, concentration, and orientation; abnormal sounds in the ears and blurred vision; and insomnia, agitation, anxiety, panic, and derealization
In the extreme, the abstinence syndrome can cause life-threatening neurological reactions, including fever, psychosis, and seizures.

The difference is the drug. The effect, about the same. You need to see a doctor if you are taking either of these as they are extremely addictive and have real rebound effects. Whatever the cause for the question, make sure you check it out with a doctor for your health, please. Also, never, ever give your medicine to anyone else. You don't know what the effect will be on them. What works for you could be lethal for them, and the reverse is also true.

Ativan is timed release, Valium is not.So basically its smoother with Ativan: stays in your system longer, and dosent hit you all at once like valium does. This makes it esier to come off ativan. With Ativan, you are less likely to have break through anxiety.

They are both sedatives. It's not exactly true to say "Valium is a lot stronger" because you never mentioned dosages. They are brand names for a sedative.
