Potentially but they may not end up being a problem at all.

I don't believe China is the world's "next big problem" but rather the problem lies in the irrational thoughts and actions of other nations. The world needs to engage with the Chinese not isolate them. Chinese credibility is riding on how well they behave and act over the next couple of years. The Olympics will change the society and the country so much. Look at what it has done so far. I remember the cries in the 90s of "What will become of Hong Kong when the Communists take over?" But look what became of China when they took over. The steps forward in the last decade are impressive. Of course the country is not "free" as we define it. But it is better and getting more so.

If there are any issues that democratic countries should push with China they should relate to human rights, better environmental stewardship and encouraging China do a little social work around the world. Why should we be afraid of China? Look at the state of the world with other powers in the driver's seat. Instead of fearing China I believe we need to engage and help them live up to the responsibilities that come with being a world economic and military power.

It may have the world's largest population, but that should not and does not put it in the category of countries that may cause USA troubles in the future. Any other country in the world can be the next big problem.

With its economic growth, China is becoming more and more westernized. The old "Communist" label that tends to follow China is fading as we speak (at least in the financial sense). Politically, China is facing the same challenges as any overpopulated countries have. I guess it is left to be seen how or which direction China is going with its rapid development. Every country in the world has 50/50 chance of becoming the next USSR or Iraq or Iran.

No, the USA is our next biggest problem.

The thing about China that has the USA beat hands down, is they finally figured out the capitalistic system was the only way to go and through a series of five year plans they are beating the holy crap out of the USA. While we argue about things that do not affect the vast majority of us.

What few plans we have in place are not known with the exception of Cheney's secret energy plan. China's planning is transparent, even you can see it on the web.

In short, our biggest problem is lack of planning and allowing us to be consumed by problems that do not affect the vast majority of us. What we are doing is fettering away our children's future and that, my friend, is selfish as hell. We really are terrible parents in that regard. We should be very concerned about our children's future, but the only future we're consumed with in that regard is the here and now. Such as, should we force prayer down their gullets, to the immigration issue that is a drop in the bucket of the things that are directly affecting their future.

Peace

Jim

no, their people are getting more rights... their economy is slipping towards capitalism... I believe the very well may be friendly with the western world in the years to come.. after all we had a good relationship with the old government before the communists took over and kicked them out to Hong Kong... I don't see why we can't start up a good relationship once again.

Why is China a problem?

They are just another society. No more of a problem than ours or anybody else's.
