The vast majority of TV shows are free, or they wouldn't have a live audience at all!
The most popular ones, such as the late night talk shows and Saturday Night Live, have very long wait lists.
Sometimes, you can get free tix just by being in the right place at the right time! Way back when I was in High School, we were on a field trip for a journalism class to Manhattan. We were allowed to go anywhere we wanted, provided that we stayed in groups of at least 3 kids (no chaperones! can you imagine that, today???). My group came across many weird and wonderful things, but, by dumb luck, we were given tickets to a showing of Jeopardy, when it was hosted by Art Fleming (I *said* it was 'way back'!!!). Being journalism students, we asked the slightly older ticket-giver what the deal was, and he said that they had a very small audience, and desperately needed to fill in the seats (which, if you think about it, is a little strange, since the audience for that show is really only used for their applause! wouldn't a tape of people clapping do as well?). The show was interesting to watch, live, because they had a few flubs (back then, the answers were revealed by somebody manually pulling-up the dollar-numbered cards!). During the "commercial breaks" (i.e., built-in times to stop the taping, and go over a few things, or touch-up the host's and contestants' make-up, etc), the announcer, Johnny Olsen, answered a few questions from the audience. After the taping, I asked Art for an interview, but he politely refused without explanation. The audience was about 85% full, and it took 45 minutes from the time we were seated to the time we left, and that wasn't even the highlight of the day!
The links below may or may not be legit, so please use with caution, and do not give out any personal information, except for your name and address. You need to be 18 or older to get in, so, even if you get the tix, if you're younger than 18, you may not get in!

Not only are they free to fill up the audience, some of the lesser known or lowly rated shows actually give stuff away...free lunches or pay the audience members to sit in for a taping.

Tickets to all talk shows are free. They do not need people to pay to get in, because that make all their money selling the advertisement spot shown through out the show.

I don't believe they charge for any of the talk shows. It is always free. The more popular ones have long waiting lists though.
