do i look at the serial number or the model number?

Check the model #. Condensing units are rated in "tons" in number form such as 12= 1 ton. So your model should read similiar to this example: 2407634M. The 24 tells you it's a 2 ton unit. If you run into 18= 1 1/2 ton, 30= 2 1/2 ton....etc.

look at how many kelo watt (KW) are mantioned on out door unit information lable.if its 2.7 it means your air con its 1HP,if its 3.2 or 3.5 you unit its 1.5 HP IF ITS 7.0 TO 7.5 ITS MEAN YOUR AC UNIT ITS 3.1 TO 3.5 HP
(HP) MEANS HORSE POWER.
