I have an old 80GB external USB Western Digital hard drive. I can peek in through the vent to read "Enhanced IDE Hard Drive."

I just acquired a used 250GB Maxtor ATA/133 hard drive.

I don't know a whole lot about the compatibility. Will the new drive effortlessly replace the old in the same enclosure? In other words, will the existing cabling system in the enclosure match the "new" 250GB drive connector?

"Enhanced IDE" is another way of saying ATA/100. As Stu said your drive will fit physically and there should not be a problem with connectors. The Maxtor should recognize the ATA/100 interface and "fall back" to that speed to communicate with the enclosure. The firmware in the enclosure is a good issue also. You may want to check on Western Digital's web site to see if there is a firmware upgrade to recognized larger capacity drives otherwise your 250Gb may only report back as 80Gb.

It SHOULD, and it will physically fit, HOWEVER the firmware in the box MAY NOT recognise such a large drive if it was shipped as an 80.

best way to be sure, try it
