Why do conservatives think that if you do not think like them that you are liberal, when in America there are many independent and libertarian thinkers?
Or, do conservatives not think but mindlessly agree with whatever their leaders tell them?

*I have already posted this question a few times, but I have not seen it show up. So if this is your 3rd time seeing this, sorry.

"You're either for us or against us"...their fearless leaders said that so they take it as gospel

The same reason Liberals bash naysayers as conservatives. I lean conservatively but don't consider myself mindless I take what I agree with balance it against the other viewpoints and come to an independent decision. I don't mindlessly agree with Bush any more than I mindlessly agree with the Liberal Queen Pelosi.

It's a common effect of ideological thinking to assume that all who disagree with you fall into some enemy camp. If any right-minded person would naturally agree with you (since your ideology is perfect), anyone who doesn't agree with you must be damaged or corrupted in some way. The only thing which could brainwash people into not recognizing your ideology's "truth" is the enemy ideology. Thus anyone who doesn't agree with you is a member of the enemy camp. Conservatives and Liberals both do this in equal measure.

on both sides, if you don't agree with someone you're often accused of being on the very far reaches of the other side.

I think both sides have a few points they do agree on though, and if both just listened a bit more they would see that.

All of us sometimes do make ourselves believe that our views are the correct ones, and anyone who disagrees is incorrect. It's not just conservatives. I promise.

More taxes, or Less taxes
You either are working or on the draw
You either think for yourself, or Uncle Ted, tells you what to think
You either realize we are in a war for our survival or you think it is a lost cause.
You either support life, or you kill life.

Yeah, all conservatives think like that. This has to be the dumbest question ever. Nice generalization.

I am sure if you look hard enough, you will find liberals who think if you do not think like them then you are conservative.

I do not believe all conservatives believe that, only some indiviuals. There are always going to be people who think like that.

When we invaded Iraq Bush and his cronies said if you aren't with us you're against us. Then started to push this. Thus the great divide was fed and nurtured.
