i thought before that it was just because it was more gentle for the babies sensitive skin, but i recently heard that regular detergent takes away whatever makes the babies clothes flame retardent, so its dangerous.

It's not absolutely necessary, unless your child does in fact have sensitive skin. Dreft tends to be pricey too and it's a pain sometimes to do small loads of just the baby's clothes so, if you notice that regular detergent isn't agreeing with baby's skin after trying it try All free and clear (or All Baby). Honestly, any "free and clear" detergent will work just as well. Use half of the recommended dosage though, since "free and clear" tends to leave a residue in clothes.

depends on baby's skin sensitivity. If you already have it, wash a load in dreft and wash a load in your family detergent. Keep the clothes separate. Have your baby wear only the clothes washed in family detergent. If nothing happens you know you can do away with the baby stuff and if they do have a skin reaction to it you have clothes already washed in baby stuff to put them in while you rewash the rest of the clothes. Also baby all is just as great as dreft. also a bit less expensive. If yuo dont allready have it see if you cant have someone give you a wash load of it so you can try before buying

totally not necessary. I think generations before lived through the Non Dreft Eras.
I thought it was used for babies who have sensitive skin that reacted to things easily. If your baby's skin does not react to regular detergent, then don't use dreft. Besides, it takes up more space in the laundry room. =) It is also free of various scents and unneeded additives ...like Dreft. The good things its...that you can use it for the entire household.

The special detergents are expensive aren't they! I think it varies from child to child. My first to children did not require anything special. My normal detergent was OK, but with my 8 month old his skin is very sensitive and breaks out with a rash from everything. So if you do not have problems with your babies skin then use reg. detergent. If it causes problems then get the Dreft. I hope you do not have to because as much laundry as a new baby makes it gets expensive. Good luck to you and yours !!

Actually I have heard that Dreft is one of the worst detergents to use for babies (I heard this after I used it for a long time with my son). I think All free & clear is supposed to be the best option for babies.

Many baby clothes are flame resistant, and washing them in ordinary detergent will make them no longer resistant to flame. Dreft and other baby detergents do not contain the harsh soaps and chemicals that normal ones do. I'd say pretty important!

I love Dreft for my kids clothes. I use it for about the first year or so and then wash with our normal detergent. But, my Husband and I both have sensative skin, as do our children.
But I love the smell of Dreft. Very nice.

Their skin is pretty sensitive for a while. I would use something special BUT let me tell you what my pedi told me. Use ALL baby because it has no fragrance or dyes at all and is MUCH cheaper than dreft. I was using dreft and my son's skin kept flaring up (he has eczema) and it ended up when I changed to the ALL it quit flaring! Its up to you which you use but if your baby is young I would def stay away from the regular detergent.

I did the whole Dreft thing because the hospital said so. But it was extremely pricey. They say its because of sensitive skin. I talked to the pediatrician and they said to use Tide Free, does the same job but for half the price. Try a few of the different fragrance, dye free detergents and go for whatever works best and doesnt irritate your precious infants skin! good luck!
