This question is on regularly. The chicken came first because the egg is only a potential chicken.

It depends. If you are talking about the eggs from which chickes hatch then the chicken came first. The embryo is made first then the shell is built round it. Of course this means you have to accept that an embryo is a chicken which could get awkward.
