I'm just curious what your opinion on eating disorders is. Would you consider it a disease (physical or mental) or a choice that people make. I know some people believe that eating disorders are just things that celebs and stupid white girls have to try to get attention. I disagree 100% I myself have suffered, and to a certain extent am still suffering from an eating disorder, and I'm am neither stupid nor white. Just out of curiosity has anyone else suffered from an ED? Yes I know this should be in the health section, but more people come here, so I figured I'd get more answers.

Only serious answers please.

I am completely pro-anamia. I mean, it is a lifestyle choice. What goes into one's body is their choice and they should not be forced to comply with society's standards. I do not believe I have an ED, however. Although quite a few people think I do. I guess if I had to categorize my 'ED' I would be EDNOS leaning on the anorexia. Difficult topic for me.

I consider eating disorders both a physical and mental disease. It is not a choice that I made. I would not wish it on anyone. It has consumed my life for the last 6 years. I've been in recovery but ive relapsed recently. I never think I will be 100% better. I've been suffering from anorexia and bulimia . But I am getting better slowly but it consumed me so much that i refused treatment for a very long time. I've gained weight and don't like it but I'm having to learn to be ok with it because I was 5'8" , 17 yrs old, female weighing 88 lbs. Yes there is a sterotype associated with this disorder but there are lots of others that do not fit it that suffer just as much.....

Eating Disorder or Disordered Eating???

Yes, I have. When I was in high school, I had a severe problem with ED. There were times when I didn't eat for a week. I only weighed 100 pounds...sometimes less. As I got older, things got much worse for me. I'm 28 years old now, weighing about 120 pounds and I'm more insecure about my weight than ever! Sometimes I look at my self in the mirror and get sick. I'm guessing maybe because most of the girls I went to school with who were once almost as skinny as me, are now fat (marriage and children may be the factor). I don't want to turn out like that! Not ever! I should get help, but I know it would never work.

i consider eating disorders to be a mental disease. your brain gets so messed up from ED's. I somewhat suffer from bulemia. I can eat some things, yes, but if eat too much, even if its only by a little, i feel the urge to puke my brains out. I do a lot of binging and purging too. Eating disorders suck. I agree with you though, they arent just for celebrities and white chicks. anyone can have an ED, no matter what nationality you are. People need to realize that, stop hating people for it, and try to get them help.

Eating disorders are the result of the current, and past 30 years of needing to look like a movie star or singer, to even be acceptable, this is wrong. What is wrong with eating disorders is that they kill people. Bulimia can cause the esophagus to rupture bringing death quickly if not addressed, and anorexia is well known to be a form of starvation which ends in death.

i have suffered from anorexia. i used to think it was my choice but after going into treatment i beg to differ. and in reality eating disorders have very little to do w/food but alot to do with coping.
