I hear it's all controlled by hobgoblins who took over a rabbit warren during a sit in and now spend their entire day copying the stuff onto chalk boards and then frantically re typing it after removing all the attached pictures.
It would certainly explain why nobody sees hobgoblins any more!

Inventive answer: It is all being stored in the brain of Chuck Norris.
The Internet is merely a framework for exchanging information (email, websites, application services, etc...). The information is stored on individual systems of the providers of that information. As more information is presented, information vendors bring more servers/storage online.

The internet is basicly a connection of computers and data-bases, that are all linked together at some level.
It is not really infinitely large, as you said, as there are millions of servers... But their is a limit of the internets size, directly determined by the amount of computers connected together in the world.
The infomation read is only sent between companies' servers (like a host or a website), and the computer which is browsing and downloading from the internet.
You are certainly right that the 'size' of the internet is expanding, as more web pages are created each second (while I have been typing this, there may have been a thousend new pages created); and also the amount of servers and hosts connected into the internet at any one time is also increasing.
=] That inventive enough for you?

There's a ruddy, great spider squatting in the middle of it eating up all the information! OOPS! No there isn't, I just stood on it! No, seriously, it's okay... I didn't really hurt it. Really Seriously, that's not a bad analogy. The 'huge spider' is all the servers and computers... soaking-up whatever they want... or, in some cases, don't want; the web is all the phone lines, sattelite and radio waves that we all utilise each time we go on the net.

It goes from the web server to the ISP then to the DNS then to your computer.
It can travel through millions of routes and may not take the same route all the time. Routers tend to take the fastest route, but not necessarily the shortest.

It doesn't go anywhere, unless people delete their sites. Storage space is increasing at a massive rate, you can now have a 2Gb email box for free whereas 5 years ago you were lucky to get 2Mb. The more space, the more people can make sites.

I can say with authority that every April 1st the Internet is closed for Spring Cleaning. This prevents the system clogging up with old unvisited sites!

The Internet only refers to the cables and hardware that connect you to other computers around the world. Information is travelled through your telephone line hence the meaning "online"
