It could be that your CPU fan is full of dust. I recommend you clean it. Not with water. I use a vacuum that exhaust air. That way all the dust is blown out of the chassis. Do it to both Power Supply fan and CPU fan. Also the entire inside of the chassis. Do it outside. You wouldn't want to do it inside. It it still continues then just replace your CPU fan. Also your friend might be right, you might need more RAM. Since your computer is working so hard it might need more memory to process faster since its processing slow it will make the CPU run at full speed and produce more heat than normal. So in effect your CPU fan will run at full speed to cool it down.

The noise is most likely coming from your computer's fan. When the CPU is working very hard, it starts to generate alot of heat. To prevent it from overheating, there are a number of fans installed inside your computer. The fans start when a preset temperature is reached. Over time, dirt and grime builds up on a fan and causes it to make alot of noise. You need to open up the computer case and clean it. You can purchase a can of compressed air at your local computer store for about $7-10. Spray the fan a few times to dislodged the dust and grime. Otherwise, you can install a quieter fan, roughly $35-55.

If it's hard drive noise then you really can't do anything about it short of buying a new hard drive that is quieter, why don't you try repositioning the machine, if it's on top the desk then move it below the desk
