People are very cruel to their pets. They complain about vet bills all the time if they even bother to seek medical help for their animals. If you have a pet, you need to be responsible for it.

I agree that many pet owners are irresponsible for their critters, but I feel if someone is asking another opinion, at least they care that much. Sometimes finances change after a pet has been gotten. It is a shame I pay more for my animal's care than I do my own. Vets are WAY expensive. I recently paid $500 to try to save a goat that ended up dying at the vets office. Still had to pay! And carry off a dead goat. For $500, you think they could have disposed of it for me....no, that would be extra. I think when people ask, they are questioning themself, to see if it is just an emotional response on their part, or really something to be concerned with. If you call the vet, they always say to bring it in. They will not give much information over the phone without seeing the animal...and of course they want your money! I agree that we all should learn to trust our instincts, though. You know your own animal better than anyone...behavior out of the ordinary needs to be addressed ASAP. Rarely is there much the common pet owner can do for the pet...breeders and such is a different story....they have more knowledge and the tools it takes to handle the more simple of ailments. Even they use vets on a frequent basis, though.

I completely agree. I always see people saying, I have no money!!!!! First off, getting a dog means being finacially responsible for emergencies. I understand things happen, but you need to have backup in case of emergency ideas AT LEAST! Vets do take credit cards, and a loan from a family even if you don't want to. Give me a break! I can understand if it is an iffy thing, like for instance, my dog's toenail broke last week. That is an iffy thing, not my dog is puking blood, is there anything I can do at home for it? COME ONE PEOPLE!!!! Very good question!

BTW-- Pet insurance is always a good option!

My views are, it's not always convenient to take your pet to a veterinarian, maybe because of distance or finances. I already know what some are going to say. If you can't afford a veterinarian bill, you shouldn't have a pet. What of the elderly on small fixed incomes whose only companion is the pet? What of the homeless person who rescued a homeless cat or dog and shares his meager food supplies with that pet. It is not always so cut and dried. There are circumstances.

I think it is similar to when we get ill. You're unsure if a trip to the vet is needed. I say err on the side of caution and take the pet to the vet. A vet will never tell you a visit isn't necessary. Unlike us, animals (out of pure instinct) will not show illness until it is almost too late. Weakness is fatal in the wild. Never guess and never just sit and wait, it could be life or death. As for vet bills, suck it up. If you can't afford a vet visit, you can't afford to have a pet.Period.

I think instead of saying "don't be cruel", we should say "don't be so cheap!" I think most people are seeking advice in the form of home remedies. Nobody wants to go to the vet and have a huge vet bill! But, if you can't afford to take the animal to the vet every once in a while, you shouldn't have them.

Your assuming their smart enough to know what a vet is. Your right though. If something seems to be wrong with your pet it should be checked out by a professional. A brief description by an amateur answered by amateurs isn't as good as professional help.
They might as well be asking " How do I give myself an apendectimy ?" Answer, "Take a butter knife and start stabbing."

You must realize that some people don't have the funds to take a pet to a vet everytime it gets sick and this site has some very good advise about different illnesses that a dog can have and are well experienced in the fact.At least many on here are at least trying to help their pet and are responsible owners.
