A well maintained guitar can last for decades.

A vintage mahogony Les Paul should be nice, but the "real" Les Pauls have maple tops that give the treble that extra "snap". The mahogony body ones will result in a "warmer" tone, with less treble in the total sound. Also, Les Pauls feel different than Fenders - the "scale length" is a little shorter, so the upper frets will be closer together - if you have never played a Les Paul, try one side-by-side with a Fender - you will notice the difference. Both cool guitars, but different.

I've owned Les Pauls and I didn't like it..I own a telecaster and I love it..you can change the pickups but a Les Paul costs alot of money..good luck
