May of 1945 it was liberated by Allied forces that took control of the region.

The Nazis killed as many of them as they could before they retreated and left it abandoned. they ran out of bullits and would even club some to death. It was not great just before their liberation is was fear who would and who would not be singled out before the germans left the camp to the on coming Allies.

Once the Allies got there they were forced to keep them there temporarily for there was no place to put all these camp survivors and they all needed to be checked medically and all had to be given proper amounts of food but slowly so they did not kill themselves for not having eaten in so long.

If you go to Germany you can visit some of these camps, they are memorials and museums now and you can learn a lot about what happened. I personally have seen Buchenwald several time and each time it still effects me the same way, with sorrow.

In January of 1945, while on a death march about 7,500 prisoners were liberated by the 322nd Infantry of the Red Army. Americans and many other people, including Schindler, helped prisoners escape or liberated the death camps.

In 1945 allied forces, American and Brits, drove the German forces from their control of the concentration death camps, Auschwitz and Buchenwald and freed the surviving Jewish inmates.

The Russians were the first to reach Birchenwald (spelled it wrong) where Otto Frank was. Those survivors were nursed back to enough health that they could be safely moved to a hospital ship, then they were transported back to the Netherlands. Mr. Frank was lucky in that his employees had done a fine job of keeping his business together and they returned it to him when he came back. Most people were not that lucky.
