2a / (a + 1)

First, let's work on the bottom to change it to a more useful value: (we'll turn "1" into a fraction having a common denominator with "1/a" and combine them)

1 / [ 1 + 1/a ] = x = 1 / [ a/a * 1 + 1/a ] = 1 / [ a/a + 1/a ] = 1 / [ (a + 1) / a ].

Next, remember that dividing by a fraction is the same as multiplying by the inverse of the fraction. (The inverse is just the fraction "upside-down."):

x = 1 / [ (a + 1) / a ] = 1 * [ a / (a + 1) ] = a / (a + 1). (Because "1" times anything is the "anything.")

So, if that is what 1x equals, then 2x would be 2 times that:

2x = 2 * a / (a + 1) = 2a / (a + 1)

And we're done! You could check it by substituting, say, a = 1 into each but remember the original then has to be multiplied by 2 to equal our result:

1 / (1 + 1/1) = 1 / (1 + 1) = 1/2 and times 2: 1/2 * 2 = 1
2 * 1 / (1 + 1) = 2/2 = 1
It checks.

If:
1 / (1 + 1/a) = x

Then:
2 / (1 + 1/a) = 2*x

It took me a minute to figure this out.

You want to know this:
If
1/(1+1/a) = x, what is 2x?

Multiply both sides by 2.

2/(1+1/a) = 2x.

if x = 1/(1 + 1/a) then 2x = 2/(1 + 1/a)

2(this/that) = 2this/that
