I'm going to France in Spring '08 and I want to hit up Amsterdam. What's the cheapest way to get there and how much would it cost to travel by train?

If you book early enough, you'll get the best price. You can reserve TGV tickets up to 3 months in advance. Look into this trip as soon as you get to Paris. TGV will take about 4 hours.

Expect to pay 130-140 USD depending on the exchange rate. You might get these tickets for as little as 80 USD, but you can't get a refund or change the reservation.

Bus will be the only other option for you. It'll be cheaper but take much longer (8-10 hours).

It is difficult to say, as the prices change depending on how many tickets have been sold already.
You can not book more than 2 months before traveling, and you will find that on the first day the cheapest tickets will all be sold.

For a ticket about 2 months from now I find prices from 64 Euro to 112 euro, depending on which train is used and what kind of return options you want to have.
(that is about $85 to $150.)
You can see for yourself on this site:

The cheapest way will be the bus, Eurolines has regular connections:
I found a price of 65 euro for a ticket, about $ 85, but there are likely to be discounts and so on.

But for the coach also there is a maximum time before which they will not sell you tickets.

Apparently you know well in advance when you will be traveling. It is possible to go to AMS and back to Paris for less then 25 euros by coach, from center city to center city. You'll have to book well in advance, because the seating is limited. See www.eurolines.nl. There is an English part on the site.
