I grew up loving the sport, but with all the roid usage, the animosity surrounding Bonds, the CONSTANT ejections (the latest being Clemens and Torre), is there any hope for the beleaguered pastime? I contend it all started with the strike in the 90's and went downhill from there. It's becoming more of a "thug" sport than basketball ever was in my opinion. Any thoughts?

Go to a minor league game. The lower the level, the better. Avoid the weekend nights, the crowds are even smaller Monday thru Thursday.

Buy a scorecard and one beer or soda.

Sit in the outfield seats (or in many cases, bring a blanket to throw down on the berm).

Watch the game.

Score the game. Watch the fielders, estimate the pitchers' stuff, study the various swings. (Keep track of runs scored along with the rest, but the actual outcome isn't important tonight.)

Sip beverage as sun goes down.

Enjoy the game.

If desired, hang around either locker door afterward, try to get autographs on the scorecard or just chat with some of the players.

Drive home. Do NOT turn on Sportscenter. Ignore the majors tonight.

See if there is anything wrong with your evening.

Major League Baseball is fine. There have always individuals who weren't the nicest of people. For Example one Ty Cobb who went into the crowd and beat up a disabled heckler. Baseball survived the Blacksox and the 94 strike it will survive Steriods. As to Barry Bonds I used to love watching the guy play but he's not a likeable human being.

No, baseball is only getting better. I think now that the game is being cleaned up MLB will get back on top. If drugs is the only thing to worry about considering what's going on in sports I would say, MLB is an angel.

I would say the NBA is a sport in the crapper. It's full of thugs that overshadow good people like LeBron, Duncan, and Wade.

They have this current betting scandal.

The league is now full of foreigners. And this isn't bad however look at americans who don't even know the fundamentals of the game. The World is schooling us in our own sport.

Baseball is one of the few sports that I enjoy watching, besides soccer. I love american football too but you have punks like Vick and Adam "Stupid" Jones, and the list goes on. I mean Vick brought his troubles in my own backyard, since I like in ATL.

Talk about thugs in sports, how about Michel Vick? How many ex NFL players have served time? not to mention the controversy of Magic Johnson and Kobe. Cobb was an absolute a** that sharpened his cleats to cut a defensive player if they tried to block the plate when he slid in. Mickey Mantle's alcoholism was well known also. Despite all these "less than perfect behavior" we still love seeing a close race, a game saving tackle or a seemingly impossible dunk. There are always a new set of rookies at every sport that will capture our our imagination and give us thrills every time they take the field. Don't become a "cynical old man" . There is always plenty of good sports to be enjoyed and argued over. Don't let these "wanna be Great sports writers" take away from the things you love. I am sure they are less than perfect themselves.

Sorry to have to prove all the negativity wrong, but two weekends ago baseball set a record for the highest attendance in MLB history for one day. I forget the number but it shattered the previous record. And baseball is the only major sport right now without a current player/manager serving jail time.

Well, ejections have always been a big part of baseball and I don't see that effecting baseball in a negative way.

But I think that all the talk about steroids + Bonds is really killing baseball.

I was thinking yesterday how it was not till Ichiro did we see a Japanese ball player in the MLB, is this due to the prejudice nature of Americans not even able to fathom that someone other than an American could be good at this sport, or is it that not all of our best athletes are Baseball players anymore.
The expansion of the league (more teams less talent) may also be a factor.

If you're talking thugs and going down the toilet, take a better look at Football.

No - it's alive and well. The steroid era has come and gone and the game has changed a lot, but it's still enjoyable to follow and watch, in my opinion.

I think that pro baseball is doing fine compared to the NHL and the NBA. Have you ever seen Bonds say directly I did not take steroids?
