I am new to supervising. I am in charge of one person. I get orders from above about what my person is doing wrong or unfavorable. I then need to communicate the message. I don't think the person takes it well because I am getting negative attitude back along with incomplete work.

I need help!!

I think making the situation seem like a team effort rather than a "you screwed up" situation would help. Meet with the person and ask him/her how you both can remedy the situation or ask him/her to help create procedures to avoid any negative comments about the work being done.

Simply explain that the bosses upstairs are unhappy with their work .
You know the remedies if they want to continue working there .
Ask the person if they want you to coach them OR
would they rather look for work else where .
You can only directly supervise / coach for a couple of days ,
Then you just check about once an hour to see if they are understanding the tasks .
If they are task competent within a week . . . good .
If Not , they may lack the aptitude and you have to advise the higher ups to seek another employee .
