My husband and I are going to need a sleeper train from Paris to Rome. Then, another from Rome to Frankfurt.

Is there a separate reservation fee? And a separate sleeper car cost? What should I expect to pay for this?

Paris to Rome on the night train that leaves Paris Bercy station at 7:05 pm is the cheapest train, $160 per person
2nd class and $261 1st class.
Rome to Frankfurt is about $248 2nd class and $355 first class.
That should include the couchette, but if not, a shared bunk in a 6-person compartment is about $26 extra, and in a shared 4-bunk compartment it's about $36 extra per person.
I t looks like on raileurope.com the couchettes are included in the "Freedom" fare 2nd class, but not in the "economy"; however the price is the same. That's odd.

Considering that the two trips above added together total at least $408 (2nd class), you could get a 5 day/4 country Eurail Select Saver Pass, and choose France, Italy, Switzerland, And Germany for your pass. That's $406 for first class. Then you can pay the supplement a day or two before departure at a train station to reserve and add on a sleeper. Note: some trains have more expensive private compartments; if that's what you want, it's not listed on raileurope.com, but you can buy the tickets I metioned above online.

If you want a private compartment (for one or two people) there is an additional charge besides the cost of a first class train ticket. It will be quite expensive.
A cheaper alternative is a couchette. These are special cars in which the seats can be transformed into bunks sleeping six people (2nd class) or four people (lst class) Sheets, blankets and pillows are provided. Again there is an additional charge for these beyond the price of the ticket, but they are much cheaper than compartments. All of the above must be reserved prior to travel.
