You know I (being a Black man) wonder the same thing. I've had the opportunities to work on some campaigns as a staffer, organizer, and manager, so I've come across my fair share of conservatives. I'd tend to agree that amongst them there is a sense of wanting to protect the status quo.
Whether it is in the form of segregation, or some other more covert measure, I'm not sure. However, what is clear, is that most of them who feel that way tend to answer racial issues in terms of financial, environmental, and educational motivation. As if Blacks want to squalor in poverty and ignorance (there may be a couple, but not as a whole) their entire lives.
It's sickening how easily Whites can disregard everything from slavery to the Civil Rights, and then say things like "What does then have to do with now" like things are so much better because we are free... Well, to me that's BS, it is the land of the free, so it's not like they gave us anything we weren't entitled to already.
I realize that I went off on a tangent, but long story short, if you want to know how a "conservative" feels about this, then ask them how they feel about interracial dating. That'll give you the answer. If they are clever, ask them about the influence of rap music on our culture and watch their reactions... Another tell-tale sign. They'll use the first amendment to justify most anything except rap music.

The greatest thing about Conservatives is that they're a dying breed. Cons are only against issues, never for them. They are losing the fight and in time we will have bred out most Conservatives.
And yes, Conservatives and the other red necks were the prime opponents to ending segregation. It's easy for a 30 year old Con today to say the Con party was never for segregation but that is just false. Cons(Republican) have always been on the opposing side of the progressive issues that better our country. If Cons had it their way from the beginning, we would still have slaves, women wouldn't have rights, gays would be locked up, etc..
Thank "god" for the liberal movement.

No and no. Look up the dictionary definition of conservative and tradition. No one is for segregation. I am a conservative. It means I want less government, less taxes, less government intrusion. That may be a traditional view, but it does not mean I favor all traditions.

Nope, times change people change. Conservative, just means "to keep guard; observe." Pending on the way you are looking at this, like Political Values, Religous, Patriotism, etc. depends on the way it is used, and what it means. It also differs per country and sometimes areas. For someone who is opposed to abortion is usually called "conservative, however someone who is for working on our economy and enviroment are consider conservative too. Are you looking at this as a UK view? If so, Conservatives are generally supportive of reduced government intervention in most matters. They are also noted for stance against further EU integration. Many commentators believe that their failures in UK politics from 1997 were partly as a result of continued internal tension between Europhiles (such as Kenneth Clarke and Michael Heseltine) and Eurosceptics (such as John Redwood and William Hague). However, the Conservative party has in recent years largely come to terms with these issues, or has at least ceased to argue quite as publicly over what remains a contentious internal issue.
Not actually sure if I answered your question, but I hope so!

Did you herniate yourself stretching for that one? Why stop at segregation. Traditionally slavery has been around the world for 1000's of years. Why not insult people by calling them slave mongers? Why not ask how many German Americans are Nazi? That was a tradition. Ask how many Sicilians are Mafia. That was tradition. Ask how many Jewish people stone recalcitrant children, that was tradition. Why do you people keep. Showing your ignorance with parrot half-baked ideas. Oh, yes, I see. You are just carrying on tradition for your kind.

The word itself is politically neutral. It just means separation, as in segregating the sheep from the goats or the tomatoes from the potatoes. The Civil Rights movements of the 60's fought to end the segregation of black from white students in school. In Toronto, as I type, the Toronto School Board is meeting to decide on a motion (from the black community) to establish all-black schools. So whatever political significance the word has, as of today, I have no idea. Edit: The Toronto School Board voted in favor of "Afro-centric schools." Everything old is new again!

Conservatism isn't as much about tradition as it is about the concepts of "If aint broke, don't fix it" and "look before you leap". Slavery and segregation were obviously blights on society that needed to come to an end.

Umm. No. We look for human rights and equal opportunities, as well. It's hard to say that segregation gives equal opportunities, isn't it? That said, the same reason is why we oppose hiring quotas and affirmative action, because it tilts the tables unfairly towards minorities.

What's funny about cons is that all religious, economic, social, scientific, philosophical, artistic and political advances that liberals have made by fighting cons throughout the ages are taken for granted. Only the changes that come after a con's birth/birth of political consciousess are bad. Pretty convenient. The world is flat. The Catholic church is the only church. King by divine right. People as chattel. The sun orbits the earth. ALL conservative ideas defeated by liberal ideas. Kids would still be working in coal mines, women would not be voting, and blacks would be going to separate schools and riding in the back of the bus if cons had won. Don't cons realize they are the bad guys? In history, in art, in life?

No, not really. I think conservatives now focus on family values and being anti-abortion. Though some don't like minorities the vast majority of them have no problems with them. Most are not for segregation, they are just the minority.
