Go for Avast! or AVG. AntiVir has higher detection than either of the two, but the free version is so bald in features that it's almost an on-demand scanner. Personally I prefer Avast!, because it offers a stronger real time shield and has better detection which includes Web Shield and p2p shield. It is also much more customizable than AVG as there are about 50 different skins available. AVG, on the other hand, is more resource light and receives greater updates. It has an easier interface and perfect for old systems.

If you want a free anti-virus I recommend in this order (install only one):
1. Avast!
a. Real-time protection
b. It has an option to delete a virus once found
c. Can detect about 87.46% of viruses.
Cons: Too many icons and confusing user interface
2. Avira AntiVir
a. It can detect malware better than Avast and AVG
b. It's cute umbrella icon
c. Can detect about 94.26% of viruses
Cons: A very sluggish update
3. AVG Free
a. A simple interface (easier to use than Avast! and Avira)
b. Can detect about 82.82% of viruses
Cons: low virus detection
Although I agree NOD32 is the best anti-virus on the market, do not install more than one anti-virus.

Man. Those are some slim choices. But they're all actually pretty good for the basic internet user. I prefer avast over avg and never tried avira but it has great reviews

All three are good. One friend of mine swears by AVAST as she had problems with AVG and ZoneAlarm working together. Other friends prefer AVG.
Since they are all free, download one and try it. If you don't like it, uninstall and download another.
( Note: Only use one anti-virus product. Running more than one can cause conflicts thus rendering each ineffective.

I have used avast for the last 2 years and havent had any antivirus; or trouble. It is also maintenance free as it updates itself.

Do a little research and form you own opinion also.
Go to http://www.download.com and search on AVG and then Avast
My opinion is that AVG is better. I've been using AVG for about a year and it's the best thing since white bread!!!
Check it out for yourself. Read the editor and user reviews at "download.com" and see what you think.

I've used both and currently use Avast! It seems to me to have less "false positives" that AVG.
Either or really, try them both out and go with what you feel is better.
Both are excellent in my opinion.

The more the merrier. I am running NOD32, Lavasoft Adaware, Spybot, and AVG. You can't be too safe.
And you should look into NOD32, its the best thing on the market currently.
