This was by far the largest selling book in pre-Civil War America. What it did was act as the number one polemic, argument for the abolition of slavery. It gathered together in one novel all of the ills of slavery, and reality was not an issue (never let the facts get in the way of a good story) and told how horribly slaves were treated and abused. I mean, how can one ever forget the escape across the ice-flow scene?

Before Stowe published, slavery was looked down upon in the North, but activism against it was limited to a fringe movement. UTC was a bestseller and it disseminated empathy for the plight of slaves to the general populace in the free states and territories. Before Stowe published, slavery was an issue that mattered to Southerners, but did not impassion many northerners. The book was what made the general populace in the North as active about opposing slavery as the southerners were about protecting it.
Also, Lincoln was very tall for the time and Stowe was average or slightly below average height.

uncle tom's cabin was such a big seller and such and influential book that the north, who loved the book, found more faults with the south. and the south, who thought the book was fraud, hated it and hated the north even more. It was one of the major reasons the war started. when harriet beecher stowe (a short person) met president lincoln, he said so this is the little lady who started this big war.

Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel personalized and made immediate the plight of the slaves, radicalizing many northerners and hardening the hearts of many southerners.
