I got them starting around 30 weeks or so, and they were very light the rest of the way. Some women get them as early as their first trimester and they may be strong. If they are painful, try laying down and relaxing. Some suggest drinking a glass of water- but this may help simply because it helps you rest and relax. Braxton hicks help thin out the cervix and are the uterus practicing for true labor. They are different from real contractions in that they don't spread from your back and they don't get stronger and closer together over time.

well im about 35 weeks pregnant and i get braxton hicks, but most of the ones i get are painful, and sort of come on a pattern like an hour apart. I was treated when i was 22 weeks pregnant for pre term labor and since then they have gotten worse. As long as the contractions dont come as often as 6 per hour its normal. My Lamaz teacher said that braxton hicks prep you for labor and sometimes the more you had throughout your pregnancy, could make the labor process shorter than those pregnant women who havent had any.

I'm 22 weeks pregnant and I've been having them for the last 4 weeks and will continue to have them through my entire pregnancy because my baby's head is laying on my cervix... It's not anything major... just your body preparing...catches ya off guard sometimes though, huh? If you're having them, due to the baby laying so low, prop your butt up on some pillows to have the baby come down into the stomach, that seemed to help me, especially at night when it was keeping me awake. Good luck, and congratulations on your pregnancy! Boy or girl? I'm having a boy....

Hi,

I am now at 32 weeks and have been feeling my BH contractions since week 16. I have been on anti-spasmodic treatment since that time and my doctor also stopped me from working and advised plenty of rest - I lie down for most of the day (it's a lot harder than it sounds!!). I have regular checks on the state of my cervix as the contractions did originally efface my cervix. My advice to you is to make sure that you are regularly examined and that you follow the doctor's instructions to the letter and you should be fine. Every day that passes brings a sense of victory!

Don't think I have gotten any yet. I am 22 weeks today, and it said to start expecting Braxtion Hicks contractions at around 23 weeks. So, it sounds pretty normal what you are going through. If they are painful and frequent than you feel comfortable with...call your doc.!!! Good Luck and Congratulations!

Nope. You're the first pregnant women to ever have Braxton Hicks contractions. :)

In all seriousness, though, they're perfectly normal, and nothing to be concerned over provided they aren't regular, fast, and predictable (and your doctor tells you to be concerned.)

It's just your body's equivalent of warm-up stretches.

I am 33 weeks and get cramps that I think are BH contractions but since this is my first baby I'm not too sure. Either way, it's normal to get them and normal not to feel them at all.

My wife and I just had our first on the 25th of last month. She got them a lot. Her OB/GYN said this is totally normal for some women, and it has to do with your body preparing to give birth. Congratulations!!
