b. taiwan. When Japan removed its troops from China, Mao Zedong resumed his fight for control of China. In 1949, he succeeded in forcing the nationalist/capitalist regime of CHiang Kaishek out of Beijing and into full retreat. Chiang re-established his seat of government on the island of Formosa. Communists have never occupied Taiwan.

a - Soviet armed forces occupied the northern half of the Korean peninsula in fall of 1945 as they pushed to the Pacific to finish the war against Japan. In 1950 North Korea tried to unify the peninsula by attacking the autocratic but capitalist South.
c - Tibet was occupied by communist China in 1950-1. Portions of the historic realm were already controlled by China before this. Arguably the date on this question isn't well chosen, but alas.
d - China became communist in 1949 when Chiang Kaishek fled to Formosa.
