Ignorance...Many Americans have been pumped since childhood to accept America as the world leader in morality as well as the rest of the 7 major virtues of Socrates. This "training" has not only produced a superiority attitude but has given many an arrogant character that has alienated many Americans from the World Community and reflected this fallacy in the social responses returned from civilization in general. Americans sometimes have a very SEPARATIST view and some have yet to understand that everyone, worldwide, all want to be respected and have the basic creature comforts and amenities of life like everyone else.

Well for me, I would not say I believe America is the ONLY country that beleives in freedom and justice, it's just where I was born and raise... I am happy being in America. I mean sure the government is screwed up right now and probably will be for a long time, but there isn't much anywhere else I would want to go and live cept right here in U.S. of A.

In my opinion, we believe less in freedom and justice than many other countries. If we only look at Alberto Gonzales, the US Attorney General, and see what we have been doing to so many detainees, its obvious we only let our extent of freedom extend to people we think are worthy. Not very fair, seeing as we've got things like Geneva where we've pledged to deal with detainees honorably. Realistically, there are MANY countries that believe in justice and freedom- many US citizens just won't do the work and believe everything they're told- which teaches us to hate other countries without even knowing the whole truth. I prefer not to be fed information, but instead find it on my own through various sources internationally

We are brought up believing that. The US has been isolated for 200 years by two big oceans. For much of that time we were mostly self-sufficient because we had all our own natural resources. Consequently Americans are not aware of what is going on in the rest of the world, and don't care. You can prove this by looking at the 'international news' section of any American newspaper. It's usually one or two pages, buried in the back of the paper. In every other country, international news is much more important to people.

After WWII we were the most prosperous country in the world, because every other industrial country had been damaged by the war. Our industrial capacity was untouched while every other country's industrial infrastructure lay in smoking ruins. Being Americans, we had an old idea that came from the Puritans that wealth shows God's favor, that if someone is rich it's because he's -good- and God loves him. So we arrogantly believed we were not only the richest nation but the most virtuous.

Since then we have been a world power. We have been on a continuous war footing, even in times of peace, and now we spend more on our military than the whole rest of the world combined. Since WWII we have meddled in the politics of nations around the world, but we have convinced ourselves (well, most of us anyway) that we are -helping- these nations.

OTOH, we -were- the first modern democracy, and pioneered the whole concept of self-rule, serving as a model for every modern democracy. That was some time ago, though. Now we're heading in the other direction. 8^<

Americans don't believe that we are the only country that believes in it. We are one of the only handful of countries that does anything about it. Britain , Canada, New Zealand and Australia have always taken an active role in bringing freedom to other countries. Other countries, such as Germany and France, although able to help, normally only worry about their own immediate interests and leave the "heavy lifting" to the english speaking democracies.

It's what we're taught from the time we start school, on through high school. Americans do believe in freedom and justice but unfortunately, we're getting a lesson in losing some of those freedoms and finding that justice doesn't always prevail.

because our media portays other countries in a negative light that the american way is the only way, its quite pathetic that the worlds most powerful and wealthy nation, has millions and millions of people without adequate access to health care or proper housing, all we hear is that we dont have funds to fix social security, homelessness and healthcare, and famine in our own country, but we can spend 600 million on an embassy in Iraq not to the count the billions of dollars we spend on a war that over 70% of our population doesnt support. many countries share are values of freedom and justice, but they lack the desire for imperialism that our government seems to embrace

Most Americans are unaware of what takes place in the rest of the world. All they know is what they see on the television news.
I'm guessing that it's a result of your education system or the fact that they really aren't interested. I would be amazed if more than 10% of Americans have ever travelled outside of their country.
