Most decidedly.
I'm hardly a brainiac, but I was brought up to value knowledge, quality, humbleness, a strong work ethic, and doing charitable acts.
Nowadays, just the opposite is true for far too many people here in the U.S. They actually like being uneducated, they readily accept mediocrity, they're profoundly ego-driven [flying into a rage when complete strangers disagree with their opinions], do only enough work at their jobs to avoid getting fired, and would never think of doing a kindness for a stranger.
An example of the last item, and this from just last week. I was third in line at a 7/11. The clerk was ringing up a 10-year old boy's soda and candy, and it turned out he was 30 cents short. Between me and the child was a woman in her 20s, and she had her hand in her jeans pocket impatiently rattling around what sounded like a couple dollars in coins. She could hear as well as I what was going on, yet I was the only one to step forward and good-naturedly hand the clerk a quarter and a nickel. As I got back in line, the girl in front of me was looking at me like I was some sort of psychopath for doing such an earth-shatteringly bizarre act.

I do. And PBS doesn't come in too well. But then, MTV doesn't come in at all....
