I've asked a couple of pro guitarists, and they all say the same:
you have to explore.
I use Ernie Ball extra slinky (gauge 8) and often when I buy them, people comment on how low the gauge is (makes string bending easier). The bottom line is that YOU have to be comfortable with them, and like the tone.
The leading brands are D'Addario, Ernie Ball and Elixir. However, the elixirs cost about twice as much since they are coated in order to last longer. Just buy a pack of each and see which you prefer.

I'm totally satisfied with D'Addario EXL-110s on my ES-333. I use D's on my acoustic as well. You should try a set next time to see if you like.

well it depends on what kind of music you want to play... or at least if you want heavy strings, medium or light strings...
Personally i have 2 guitars...one for metal/hardcore and the other for blues and rock....
i use heavy D'Addario strings for metal/hardcore and very very light Martins on my 'blues' guitar.
Both manufacturers are very very good.
