Nowadays, it is easier than ever to get in college, especially if you are a minority. I see so many inner city families sitting on the step all day long, and I wonder why they are stuck in poverty? Why don't they do something with themselves instead of just sitting there or just walking the streets?

Is there something our government could do to get things rolling?

People get stuck in poverty because we pay them to do so. Welfare is a way of telling people that its ok to not better yourself and try to get to a different situation. All the programs for scholarships into college are nice, but the people being offered them must have the motivation to get up and get out and learn something. Otherwise they too will be stuck in the poverty-stricken world in which they were raised. We need to stop the welfare and start the education.

Edit: Fidel, that's a bit over the line. Its a good question and one that should be given some consideration by the powers that be.

It is true that inner city families sit on the step all day long. But you can also blame the gov't. for the drug problems there to. Look at the Vietnam vets who came back and were hooked on heroin, they went broke trying to support their high and moved to the inner city. The inner city was where most industrial jobs were epically in Atlanta with the Ford plant that shut down a couple of years ago, the GM plant which shuts down in two years and textile factories which were torn down and moved overseas for cheaper labor. Their also just as many poor people in the country parts of the U.S. its just that the media doesn't show. Also how do you know that some one the people didn't have a day off or on disability?

If you don't know what it is be a minority even an educated one on this planet, let alone in this country. Then you really should just not say anything. It's easy for people who just so happened to be born with the right pedigree judge people who have had to struggle for a piece of anything in this world, seems like forever. When you get a free pass to everything, it's so easy to judge from a distance what you will never understand. These are the same type of people who fought in the civil war to stop slavery and are still fighting for this country today; when they still didn't have a right to vote until 1870 which Jim Crow quickly snatched away; however, not until 1964 which is only 43 yrs. ago; our nation began to embrace (minorities) as full citizens and finally recognized them as human. Before you judge; learn a little about those people your judging. What I find very interesting is; what you do with your time all day to be able to view these inner city families on their steps all day long?

Our government created the problem to begin with. Why better yourself, educate yourself, get a job, etc when you can get a welfare check?

Some people honestly need financial help. The rest just milk welfare. When you have the third generation of a family on welfare, something is wrong.

Being "stuck in poverty" in a mindset. Not a social or economic condition.

The gap between the rich and the poor has never been wider.
People with no money find themselves in a never-ending spiral of poverty.
The little money they have is needed for food and rent. That leaves no money to buy decent clothes, no money to travel to job interviews, no money for education, it's a never-ending downward spiral which is extremely difficult to escape from and can be psychologically debilitating.
Most of these people find themselves living in crime-ridden areas, amongst other no-hopers with no prospects.

Maybe the rich want it this way. It keeps the masses on their toes.

1. It takes money to make money.
2. It takes brains to know something.
3. It takes skills to do something.
4. It takes a psychiatrist to get out of depression for not having the 3 above.

Why do you rely so heavily on Govt??? You can't make people do anything unless you make it absolutely necessary for them to live to do so....take a look at what happened to the people so reliant on the govt in New Orleans. People must be able to take care of themselves...this is not a socialist country!
