Just look at the questions and answers here. Questions are phrased to bring out the worst of those with opposing views. Answers have sunk to name calling. ("The President is a moron","red staters sling hate", "why are Bush supporters so dumb?") I can remember when people would disagree vehimently with a politicians policy, but they were never attacked on such a personal level as now.
I personally didn't like President Carter but I never wished him to be assasinated. I sure don't agree with Senator Kennedy's policies, but don't wish the "Taliban had better aim" as was commented on Y/A by numerous "enlightened" posters. I don't agree with any of the democratic presidential candidates, but don't wish ill on any of them. I don't agree with most of the republican candidates either, and don't wish ill on them. There is hate being spewed from both sides. Others may have different political views than you, but they still deserve respect.

Ben, that's exactly what I'm talking about. You'll notice that I said "there is hate being spewed from both sides". Do two wrongs make a right? Also, notice I went out of my way NOT to mention President Clinton, because some say conservatives always fall back to blaming him. Your final comment made my point.

It started when the Republicans became so hateful towards Clinton. They spend 6 years and over $40 million to try and find something bad about him and had to settle on a BJ in the White House. These are the same people that are now being indicted for sexual wrong doings. Newt cried immorality while he was having an affair. The hypocrisy caused the Liberals to get just as vicious as the Neo-cons. It is a shame because at one time, even though they may have had different opinions, Republicans and Democrats were able to compromise. No more, the hatred is too strong on both sides of the aisle.

I don't think there ever was civility in politics, actually, and certainly not in the short history of the United States.

The editorials and political ads and political speeches and even the speeches in Congress were just as bad or worse than it is today. The malicious idiocies between the spittle-flecked supporters were just as bad back then as today.

Civility has had its moments, but those moments are merely islands in the vast sea of incivility that has been the norm for politics throughout the history of Western civilization.

Indeed it gets out of hand quite ofton on here, I admit that I have stooped there a number of times, but only because others infuriated me to that point, but I try to keep it reasonable. I do respect others views, but when some of the people on here attack mine, well, my temper get's the best of me at times.

Don't let the "political" discussions on Yahoo! Answers speak for general American politics. There's a drastic difference between real politics and Yahoo! politics.

it went away. i agree we should try to have better dialogue and some respect for each other. Remember though, this all started with Adams and Jefferson, two friends that let politics come between them. It wasn't until later in life they becme friends again.

The anonymity of the internet allows for rudeness that people would not normally demonstrate in a public setting.
