strats are a classic guitar, and some people love them, while others hate them. but lets focus just on the actual construction of the guitar, and how it relates to the sound the guitar will make. they're pretty much always set up as the following:

1- bolt on necks (easy to replace if needed, easy to fix if you break one, easy to reuse your favorite neck on a different body, etc, but they dont give you a ton of sustain because the vibration from the strings that gets into the neck cant pass to the body very well)

2 - single coil pickups (some strats have humbuckers, but traditionally they have single coils)

single coil pickups give you a sharp, twangy tone, lots of treble and bite, but a little bit thin sounding. thing Stevie Ray Vaugh, Jimi Henrix, Eric Clapton, etc. its a great sound, but if you want more beef to your tone (think AC/DC, Led Zep, or Metallica) than humbuckers are better for you. also, humbuckers cancel out a lot of noise, which single coils DONT. if you're playing in a room with a tv or a computer monitor, you might hear some buzzing coming from your amp, thats normal with single coil pickups, but humbuckers get rid of it (thats why they're called "humbuckers" they get rid of the humming".

3- the strat type tail piece (the whammy bar!).
its a cool set up if you want those whammy sounds that some people love, but they're a bit of work if you're aware of how they function. the whole bridge piece is held in by springs that can stretch out when you use the bar, causing the bridge to move and your strings loosen and tighten. that can make them go out of tune if you dont know how to handle it. its not BAD, it just takes some real time to learn to make the guitar do just what you want. Jeff Beck was a master at making his guitar stay in tune using a strat's whammy set up. Jimi Hendrix (who i LOVE) used it too, and it'd go WAY out of tune on him. so, its really the user and their comfort with it. also, restringing and setting up the guitars action can be tricky because when you adjust one string, it changes the tension on your springs, which makes your other strings go out of tune. usually you need to retune the guitar a few times before it stays just right.

so, its really not better or worse than anything else, its just a matter of what YOU like, and what you know how to handle. all guitars really stem from the Strat family created by Fender, and the Les Paul family created by Gibson, and a lot of people love one and hate the other, but really, they're just different. people tend to think of them as being "coke and pepsi" or "chevy and ford", you need to pick one side and stick with it..... i kinda think of more as "ketchup and mustard", i like both, but it depends what i'm putting it on.

good luck picking out a guitar! feel free to give me a shout if you have any questions!

I've had a Stratocaster for over 30 years. I've changed the pickups to Lace Sensors at one time and now I have Vintage noiseless on it. I own 4 electrics. 1 Gibson, 1 Epiphone, 1 ESP and my Strat.Plus 2 Martins, a Takamine and a banjo. I can play whatever kind of music I want on it. I like the feel, the sound, and yes the versatility of it. 3 pickups, a 5 way switch, and whatever effects pedals you want and it will do pretty much anything. I've played professionally for MANY years and now play mostly as a hobby. Once in a while I still perform in public. My Fender is still my go to guitar. The knobs are too close to the pickups? Come on. If you have good technique that isn't even close to a problem.

It really depends on you for starters, what do you want in a guitar most fender models are made in Mexico if you want cheap that is,i never really liked fender that much any way just because of the 3 single coil pickups and only 20 frets on the fret board, until they made the American fat strat with the Floyd Rose double locking tremolo
with 1 humbucker and 2 single coil pickups witch is right up my alley, but to answer you question i don't think there is any bad points to a fender strat if you got the money to buy a U.S.A made one that is,
i got a Mexico strat from a pawn shop for $100 about 6 or 7 years ago just because it was cheap and i was impressed with it actually played pretty good just did not like the hard ware on it,

Just like any guitar, it is only as good as the player. I think that in these days of effects and electronics, you can pretty much make any guitar sound a certain desired way, so I don't think that tone is a differentiator.

I guess it's all about tradition and looks, right? Don't you think that most people play a certain guitar because it's what their favorite guitarist plays or they like the way it looks?

I especially like the twang of a fender strat on its bridge pickup
it can also get a warmer tone using the neck pickup.
very durable guitar, well built

probably the most comfortable guitar ever made. i like 'em, even though i'm normally a semi or full hollowbody guy.
they have a distinctive sound, however, the single coils give it it's signiture, and with those, the buzzing can get bad. replace them with humbuckers, and the signature is gone.
it all depends what you're playing. they're pretty versitile

I think that their a really nice guitar, their Fender, so that's a pretty good indication of their performances, Fenders have a great sound and cool looks.

If i could afford one i would jump at the chance of getting it. But, i already have a Wash Burn (its my baby. lol) and for now that's good enough for me.

:]

i personally think there overrated but they have a rich tone, they stay in tune ok but not great, i would try one out before you buy it to see how you like it.
