If you are paying anything less than $20,000+ for a 1.5. karat ring, your are getting poor quality. Period. And most people will agree that unless you get it custom made at a jeweller, you are paying more for lesser quality from any of those mass stores. Women get so wrapped up in the size of their ring that they forget that a small flawless stone looks better than a huge flawed and yellowed one, My ring is an almost flawless diamond (First or second in all categories), and cost about just under $5000 for a 0.5 karat. It has a custom made setting that makes it look huge and it is a princess cut. It sparkes like you wouldn't believe and people always comment. Just know that you are going to get a so-so quality ring if you are looking for a 1.5 karat that is "resonably priced". I would go for a smaller size of the best quality you can afford. You can always add more diamonds to the ring later, but there is nothing you can do with a dull and yellow large stone. Go to a local jeweller and see what kind of deal they can make you. It's worth the trip.

I think the size depends on your age, income and what part of the country you live in. Mine is a 3-stone ring with a 1.09 karat center stone. All of my friends have different rings and settings - two of them don't even have diamonds. Instead, they have a large colored stone (one has a sapphire, the other a tanzinite) surrounded by small diamonds - very pretty!
If you want more sparkle out of your diamond, you can always add small stones to your setting or get a wedding band with channel set or pave stones. It it a lot less expensive than a large stone and makes the ring just as sparkly.

Pls don't get annoyed with me ok. I just want to clarify something before answering. When you talk about gold weight then its in karats. But if you are referring to gem such as diamonds, its carats ok. Right back to your question,,,there is actually no average. It totally depends on how much the person wants to spend. If its from someone you love, as long as its not too small that when you sneeze it would blown off, it would be lovely. But off course who doesn't want a big rock. Mine was 3.8 carat and my marriage ring is about 5.8 carat. My bf got her engagement ring bot .50 carat which is so lovely. Its not the actual size but the actual love that counts but again.....i love diamonds but anything above 8 carats to me is not my style. Hope this helps,

No there is nothing wrong with being curious.
I have asked my beau for something in the neighborhood of 0.5 to 0.75 carats. I have small hands so anything bigger looks ridiculous.
I actually have a personal digust of the "ice-skating-rink" phenomenon that is very popular right now. It just seems so snobby and ostentaious to have a 2-4 carats diamond on your hands. In 10 years those rings are going to look ridiculous and not very classy or you might have to pawn them to afford your kids college education. Just a thought.
*wink*

I told my hubby to buy almost a karat. Once you get to a karat the price jumps dramatically. So, I think I have 0.8. I also told him not to get a princess cut, because they start with the round diamond and then cut to a square. You are still paying for the waste they throw away. I think he diod a great job in getting a good diamond for a reasonable price. In hindsight, I wish I had asked for a princess anyway. :)

My engagement ring was less than 1 carat total. It was made up of 9 smaller diamonds. I still loved it -- it was enough for me and my husband.
Now my anniversary band is a total of 1.5 carats (three .5 carat stones) -- that is after 10 years. He wanted me to get a more expensive ring, now that we could afford it, but the one we got is perfect for me -- low key, but still looks nice.

There is no average. It just does not matter what size of diamond is in the ring or even if there is a diamond in the ring. It's just a nice token of love no matter what is in the ring.

Mine is one total. . . .50ct princess cut solitaire and .50 ct of princess cut diamond lining up on either side.
I don't think there is an "average". It's what you can afford at the time. . .remember, later you can always upgrade for an anniversary instead of getting anniversary bands and such if you want something bigger.
