What are the biggest differences you notice in the internet now, since then?

I've noticed an increasing amount of uneducated morons, perverts, and dumb kids online nowadays, and also when you look something up nowadays, you tend to get more sales advertisements than information on the topic you're looking for.

Well, the internet is much more proliferous now than it was in the mid-90's.

In the mid-90's, the internet hadn't yet gone mainstream. People were still faxing instead of emailing. People were still purchasing travel through a travel agent.

Now, the Internet allows ANYONE -- whether they're educated, well-intentioned, and honest or moronic, perverted liars -- to have a voice in the world community.

There will be some bad things that happen as a result of this, but overall, it's good that this communication tool exists. It has changed -- and will continue to change -- the world.

The old internet was restricted to the nerdy, the relatively wealthy, and college students. All three types tended to be witty and dynamic. Newsgroups in the 90's contained loads of intelligent discussions/debates on a variety of topics.

Now with more people online and an abundance of dynamic pages, anyone can say anything. Site like YouTube and (groan) Yahoo! Answers are infested with racism, idiots, and the uninformed. The average age of the user has gone down too so there are more kids posing as adults but their lack of eloquence always gives them away.

Perverts thrive too thanks to MySpace and other social networking sites. Proxies, IP masking, and VPN's aid in their efforts to elude authorities.

Internet Advertising is booming. US Internet marketing spending totalled $16.9 billion in 2006.

IMO search engines have improved though, there's a positive difference. =\

I miss the "web rings" that were popular before the search engines gobbled it up. You do not see 'web rings' much anymore.
I get tired of the ads too.
I started stumbleing with a 'stumbleupon" toolbar add on. have found some great links.
Surfnsfree has some cool 'reviews' there. with stumbleupon you can surf a different way with fewer ads. this answer may look like an ad but it was not intended that way. I just like the thing and in explaining it can't help if it looks like a promo.

there is more idle chit chat and fart jokes... such is the nature folly... especially here at answers where bored students and idling empliess babble pointlessly and play games.

As for uneducated morons...yes, you're correct. We have so many predators surfing the net in such of new prey and stupid kids falling into their traps. Very sad!

I've noticed that the Internet has gotten increasingly more user friendly and that people trust it a lot more to meet people, buy stuff, get info., research stuff for homework, etc.

In fact, I think we have become entirely too dependent on the Internet, myself included. However, what communications network allows you to talk to someone for free instead of racking up long distance minutes...or....allows you to buy last minute concert tickets without waiting in line the day of the concert?

Amount of information is better, and more sourced, If you know how to look for it. Info clearinghouses for every specialty now exist, and even the general ones (yahoo, goog, wikipedia) can be focused. That being said, there is more fluff to look for, but so much more professionalism, instead of some dudes geocities site being the only place you can find what you are looking for.

one thing i've noticed for the better is when putting a web address for say shoes i'm not getting a foot fetish porn site the worst thing now is putting in your search bar for say a tv and the main link is another website with a search bar for tv's greed seems to be the mainstay for the internet everyone want to make a quick buck instead of actually doing something
