Someone just asked a question about baseball writers, and it made me think about this. Personally, I like Gammons, Ken Rosenthal, a couple of guys at Prospectus (the ones who actually have a flare for writing) and Studeman at the Hardball Times.

On the bad side, I can't stand most of what Buster Olney writes (but I liked his book), Skip Bayless on any sport, and Dan Shaughnessy, who might be the worst sportswriter at any major newspaper. I'm also not a big fan of Jeff Passan here on Yahoo. As for the TV guys, John Kruk, Steve Phillips and Joe Morgan are about 99% hot air.

Your likes and dislikes?

I know that I will get some thumbs down for this but I love to listen to what Peter Gammons and Tim Kurkjian of ESPN have to say.
I don't have a favorite column writer really.

Likes: Ken Rosenthal is definately my favorite. He's the reason I might want to go into baseball journalism when I'm older. I also like the guys on PTI (Michael Wilbon and Tony Krugeiser), and JA Adande. I also think Suzyn Waldman is pretty knowledgable, even though she broadcasts Yankee games. I kind of like Skip Bayless (and even Woody Paige. Gee, I wish Woody never left Cold Pizza...or ESPN 1st Take, or whatever crap show it's become).

Dislikes: I basically like everyone, but there are a few I just can't stand. Joe Morgan and the other guy he does Sunday Night Baseball with can be a little annoying. And Tim McCarver and the guy who does Fox Saturday baseball with him, is definately annoying.

I could listen to Gammons talk about anything, I used to love Jim Murray...he was great to read. I like to listen to a lot of local announcers talk about the game, Larry Anderson in Philly, Duane Kuiper in SF. I like Harold Reynolds but you don't hear from him so much!

I hate hearing Tim McCarver, he talks down to everyone and thinks he was a whole lot better than he actually was. Joe Morgan makes me want to throw things at the TV. I thnk too often these type of guys try to over inflate themselves and base nothign on fact. Gary Thorne is another moron!

I can take Passan -- he sometimes touches on subjects no one else does, like territorial rights. Occasionally he writes something that smacks of "deadline in five minutes".

Colleage Brown, bleah. Far too angry far too often.

Wetzel, garbage boy.

I don't pay for ESPN, but Neyer and Baker tend to be the smartest guys on that block. Gammons gets to operate in his own universe, but he's good at what he does.

I've been a fan of Jayson Stark of ESPN since his days at the Philadelphia Inquirer. No ego; respects the game, the players, and the fans. Plus, he's incredibly knowledgable. The only negative is taht yo uhave to pay extra to read his work thanks to ESPN Insider.

There is a guy you've never heard of (unless you live in Central Pennsylvania) named Andy Linker. Very good writer. Strong historical knowledge. Sharp wit.
