I had the good fortune of meeting a "mentor". If you can wheedle your way, into meeting some programmers at likely places, such as local banks, industries, government, etc., you may, too. In other words, such folk may give you a hand determining sources of information on the (different and these days rather limited) world of mainframe programming.
ComputerWorld is a likely source of information on mainframe programming, but I don't recall whether they advertise employment opportunities.
