What being an extra does for you is it gives you knowledge on how things work on a set and puts a little bit of money in your pocket. It will NOT help you get a main role in a film or anything else and you may not even want to mention it when you start auditioning for mainstream roles.
It can be long grueling hours for not a lot in return, but if you've never done anything before it can be really helpful to know how things work on set.
good luck!

Being an extra help you to get your feet wet , you see how a movie set runs, you get experience and it can be a networking opportunity. The pay usually isn't great ( Maybe $100 a day depend on state and laws overtime sometimes is a factor) and the hours can be long but it can help you to build your resume. I don't know how much experience you have but you usually don't start off in starring roles. Sometimes and extra part can evolve in to a speaking part or a something more part. I think Christian Slater was discovered as an extra. There are usually rules on the set like not approaching the stars -- if they want to acknowledge you they will. Even extras are usually sent by talent agencies so you should get listed with as many as possible and you will probably need at least a snapshot or a polaroid to start. Eventually you may need to get a professional headshot . I have a client that has a great headshot and they almost sent him out for a costarring role based on his headshot until they looked at his resume ( He has a great headshot) and told he he needed a little more experience first. He has been an extra on Burn Notice and has had a speaking part on a Brazilian soap. The casting directors love him and he met them first by going to castings and yes by being an extra. Make sure you are on time, follow directions and be nice. Anything you can do to build your resume and learn is a good thing. I'm not saying you want to be the perpetual extra and if they treat you badly on set that is usually the production company. Don't work with them again. And you can let whoever sent you know that you weren't treated well-- if everyone wasn't treated well then that is something. If it was only you then maybe you did something to piss them off. And an acting class never hurt. Baby steps first. Good luck.

Extra work is, for the most part, just a paycheck. It offers little if any career benefit. It is something that is good for a young actor to experience, but you don't want to do it forever. It actually can be demeaning because extras are often not treated with respect on a film set. One of the worst experiences of my professional life was working as an extra on Lords of Dogtown.

most people start off doing extra work.. if someon likes your or finds you entertaining they give you a voucher. If you get three vouchers.. you pay a membership to be part of the screen actors guild. After that you can audition for roles main roles or for sag movies.. which most movies are.. there are other ways of being an actor. You can pay membership for radio and television and then eventually switch over to movies. If you decide to do extra work.. look into central casting in LA.

Working as an Extra will not benefit you, other than you get to see how movies are made, you get free food, you get to stand on your two feet for many hours.
You get to talk with actors.
Extra work is boring.
Extra work should not be put on your resume.
Extra work will do NOTHING for an acting career.

I had a friend who went to L.A. to be an actor and did extra work for a while. He gave it up b/c it was not known for helping you "make it big." He spent so much time doing extra work that he didn't have time for the auditions that might actually land him a good role.
