It was social Darwinism which generally led to Nazism, which became popular in Gemany since about WWI. Social Darwinism is the belief that in society, the strong survive and the weak perish (just like natural evolution). This led the Nazis to adopt the belief that the strong should also help evolution along by exterminating the weak factions of society. They of course saw themselves as "the strong", and the the Jews (as well as the handicapped and the criminals) as the weak.
