I hate my job, I want to leave with a bang!

I have changed jobs 5 times since I began working in 1977. I have only once served my 2 weeks notice. Believe me, now that I have moved on, the quietest way to leave was best. Of course, only a few wanted me to stay while some were willing to hold the door open.

There were two distinct times I quit a job in a spectacular way (as you put it). The first job I quit was when I was bartending at a bar. The owners lived above the bar. This on particular day, the owners informed me that about 5 bus loads of softball players (guys) were scheduled to stop after they were done playing. No problem...because the owners said they would be down to help serve the over 200 customers who would want drinks and food. Except, as soon as the softball players arrived, both owners were nowhere to be found. So, here I am, trying to serve these starving and thirsty softball players by myself. On top of it all, I was never trained in the kitchen. About 45 minutes later, one of the owners got in my face, pointed a finger in my face and said, "Because of your attitude, customers are leaving...why aren't you serving them?" I was so mad by this point, that I pointed my finger right back in her face and said, "Because of my attitude???, Because of your attitude, you can take this job, and shove it up your ***!!!" I'm leaving." and I walked out on her.

The next day she called me up and asked me to come back. I told her it would take a $2/hour raise and she agreed, apologized and I continued to work for her for about 2 years. :)

The second job I quit in a spectacular way was when I was working as a Fuel/Mileage Auditor at a trucking company. When I started working there, there were 4 people in my department. About once a year, someone would quit but the person would never get replaced. At the end, it was just me doing the work of 4 people. I finally decided I had enough and applied for college. I gave my employer 2 month's notice as a courtesy...BIG MISTAKE. The day I informed my boss of me leaving the job, I was treated like crap. So two weeks before my scheduled departure from this company, I walked off the job. But not before I sent a 3 page email to the president, all the managers and a select few friends (blind copied of course) stating all the bullshit I went through with little respect or compensation. I didn't get called back! :)

A little advise...While it's immediately gratifying to walk off the job or leave with a bang, in the end, it will only hurt you in the long run. It's important to make sure you are the better person and give your 2-weeks notice as a courtesy. To just walk off the job would give your employer the impression that you are not professional and may give bad references to any future job prospect.

Once I did. I had originally told them that I needed to quit to go to school, and they begged me to stay saying they'd give me whatever time I needed to do school stuff. Well, they lied. After I graduated college (mind you this was a dumpy place and everyone only made about $7 per hour, which in CA doesn't buy anything!) they didn't even say thanks. I was there for 4 years! People who were there for 4 months got a going away party. I was angry.

In the middle of lunch I just got up, began walking out the door and they asked if I was leaving. I said "Yes. And as soon as I walk out this door I'll be making 4 times the money you all are, and you'll all be stuck here forever." Then I walked out.

Depending on what level of job it is, you might want to carefully consider your actions. If this is a summer job working at McDonalds, then no major concerns. If you are talking about a career position, I'd avoid leaving in a bad way. You never know when a new employer might require checking past references.

If you do decided to leave with a "bang", just make sure you can't be taken to court (i.e. don't steal or destroy anything, no threats of harm, etc...).

i did and all though i dont miss that job - never burn your bridges - i worked for a company for two years from a sales associate to management - and i worked my *** off - my district manager wouldnt let me handle things the way they needed to be handled ( fireing certain employees) he would keep telling me to wait - well this was makeing my store look bad and everything would keep comeing back on me - when i broke my hand he even told me if i didnt come to work that day he would fire me - it was time for our inventory and i was working late everynight i mean until 1130 or 1200 by myself - and i would be in the store no later than 7 am plus i lived like 30 / 45 minutes away - so they day before inventory the dm from another district came to my store and was trying to help me and she was getting all these people to help me - ( what my dm should have done a long time ago ) and it pissed me off - i told my assistant manager and my @nd assistant to dare me to quit - and they did thinking i wouldnt but i did - so it was stress releif on my part - but i shouldnt have done it the way i did - i really enjoyed the job ( i wanted a career in that field ) and the best reference i had is gone because instead of just giving a notice wheter it was two days or two weeks i walked out and laughed about it -

Unfortunately not with a bang. I've done it twice. Once when I worked at walmart (i was in high school) I went to lunch and never came back. 2nd time I was working on a production line and they were really short on people and the so called boss at the time was giving me sh*t so I walked off during production.

I remember reading about a guy, a car salesman, in England who thought he had won the lottery, having checked the wrong set of numbers. He told his boss to stick his job where the sun don't shine. He went completely over the top, so when he realised his mistake he still had to leave and find another job.

I haven't yet, and I do like my job, I can't quit just like that though. Gotta make sure I have something else lined up.
But when I do, I want them to remember the day for a long time.

(*lol*) Only once. It was really nice! But as an adult, with bills and all the rest...I just find a new one and give notice.

Although, I admit, after the last two "let me tell you why I'm leaving" emails that went to the CEOs and down...I'm tempted.
