I'm always hearing about police brutality caught on tape and the fact that they got secret video of so and so's wedding.
How come all these 'citizens' don't use their obvious investigative capabilities in catching actual crooks?
How come our civic duty is to catch Britney buying gum but not in catching Joe Bad Guy breaking and entering?

I know the economic side of it, I am asking about the moral side. We spend so much energy chasing the buck, why not secure our own safety?

Footage of crimes in progress makes for great video. The problem is it's just hard to come by. I'm out at night covering crimes, fires and accidents and have been doing so for about 20 years and I have yet to film a crime in progress, or an accident happen or a fire start. Everything has always been after the fact. Catching police brutality on tape is fairly easy because the police operate in the open and with uniforms, cars, lights etc, naturally call attention to themselves.

Celebrities are followed around 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They have people sneaking onto their private property, or paying dressing room clerks for access. Basically a popular celebrity is stalked. Ordinary criminals or even ordinary people who might do something criminal aren't followed around like this. And there is really no way to even know if someone is criminally inclined in the first place. So it would really be a total waste of time to stalk an "ordinary citizen" to catch them doing something illegal. If we were all followed around constantly a photographer could certainly find something humiliating or questionable to publish about any one of us.

Very very good question. But we all know its about the buck!
The nastier the scandal, picture, or bigger the name the better the payoff.
We only have our selves to blame.
As we all know "Inquiring minds want to Know" and be damned the consequences.
