to have to report his end-of-year tax payments to the press?

And is this mentioning of it each year supposed to be some kind of assurance to the general public that yes, indeed, the President does have to pay taxes as well as the rest of us?

I don't ever remember the press mentioning Clinton's tax payments each April. But then again, I wasn't watching or listening to the news as often as I do now, back then.

David... I didn't mean to come off as being jealous of how much he makes. I just don't remember this message as having been so... vocal, I suppose... before the past couple of years.

The president (and most elected officials at all levels of government) are required to file an annual financial report that includes all income and assets. This report is available to the public. While it does not normally include the actual tax forms (since they contain the person's SSN) it does include the financial data. Some people have a problem with people that earn a lot of money.

All public officials do and have had to for many years. You answered you own question with the last sentence.

It is public record. Every president does it as they are required by law (just like senators and others).

Remember when Hillary's came out because it was done wrong?
