For free choose either - AVG, Avast! or AntiVir (the one I use) all three are good and free!
As for a firewall I would go with Comodo personal firewall but I heard that Zone Alarm Free is good too!

I usually go to Majorgeeks they have lots of stuff aside from free firewall protection and everything is guaranteed to be tested and not to have spyware.
