I'm trying to understand how to calculate compound interest for mortgages, but I can't use the formula because I don't know what the symbol means. Can someone please help me understand? Thanks.

^ is called caret. It may mean "raised to the power of"

x^2 means x squared or x multiplied by x

You mean this ^? That is an exponent symbol. There are no superscripts in many programs, so that is used as a substitute. 2^2 should be read as two squared, and 27^-1/3 is 1/3.
