For some of the time we are developing inside our mothers, we have the possibility of being either male or female until that key X or Y chromosome kicks in. The nipples are just left over from that time. I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

Not only does male hormones effect the characteristics of male nipples but, there may be a genetic factor as well. Perhaps the male trait for "nipples" is a recessive one.

In general terms as much as men dont seem to believe it. The nipples or "chest area" is just another sweat gland. My anatomy teacher discussed in class one day that men can actually breast feed their infant if it came down to survival because the breast area is a over grown sweat gland. Women produce milk because of hormones, etc. But the overall picture, its an over all sweat gland.

Technically, they are called a "vestigial appendage" in the case of males. You see, all fetus' are female at conception and the male differentiates a few months later under a hormonal influence. The nipples are from the female development and are already a physical feature before the hormonal effects change the female fetus into a male fetus.

As has been mentioned before, it's a leftover trait that we were all endowed with while in the womb. I would like to add, however, that there have been cases of males lactating to feed babies when there are no women around or under extreme stress.

They are left overs from the earlier parts of developement in the womb, when we were neither boy nor girl
